The event was organized by TURKSOY and starred the Turksoy Symphony Orchestra and the Jonathan Griffith Singers performing the aforementioned classical masterpiece by Turkey’s first opera composer, Adnan Saygun.

Rengim Gokmen, the orchestra conductor, trained both the chorus and orchestra, the latter consisting of 80 distinguished performers from several Turkic nations. However, its latest U.S. appearance was sung in Turkish by an American choir whose singers were at first unfamiliar with the language. After a month of rehearsing, the beloved 13^th century Sufi poet’s words were sung in the very language in which they were originally written. Jonathan Griffith, the artistic director and principal conductor, described the choir’s singing in Turkish as an “interesting learning experience” and that they had “great coaching from the maestro as well as the accompanist Fugen who has helped our pronounciation…”
