On April 25, 2012, a wonderous performance entitled “TURKSOY Presents: Symphony of Voices from Turkic Lands” featuring the “ Yunus Emre Oratorio” was held at the Strathmore Theatre in Rockville Maryland, 55 years after the oratorio itself  had debuted in the United States at the United Nations General Assembly. The event was organized by TURKSOY and starred the Turksoy Symphony Orchestra and the Jonathan Griffith Singers performing the aforementioned classical masterpiece by Turkey’s first opera composer, Adnan Saygun.

Rengim Gokmen, the orchestra conductor, trained both the chorus and orchestra, the latter consisting of 80 distinguished performers from several Turkic nations. When the oratorio first appeared in the United States, it was directed by the renowned Stokowski and was featured in English. However, its latest U.S. appearance was sung in Turkish by an American choir whose singers were at first unfamiliar with the language. After a month of rehearsing, the beloved 13th century Sufi poet’s words were sung in the very language in which they were originally written. Jonathan Griffith, the artistic director and principal conductor, described the choir’s singing in Turkish as an “interesting learning experience” and that they had “great coaching from the maestro as well as the accompanist Fugen who has helped our pronounciation…”

Both Jonathan Griffith and Firat Puras, the Deputy General Director of TURKSOY were in agreement on their views regarding the transcendence and power of the great poet’s words. When alluding to Yunus Emre’s poetry, Griffith remarked that “the words he wrote in the 13th century are just as valuable today. His sentiment of peace for humanity are truly just as timely.” Puras’ statement is just as agreeable, “The philosophy of Yunus Emre, which transcends time and borders, reaches into the present.” When taking such words into account, it’s no wonder that such a harmonious vision has been transmitted from a venerable poet’s notebook to the music and hearts of today.
