September will be filled with a variety of events showcasing Turkish culture, fine arts, cuisine, fashion, and connections with the American people. The Turkish Heritage Month is organized by ATA-DC in partnership with Turkish Airlines, Tysons Corner Center, Turkish Culture and Tourism Counselor`s Office, DC Shorts Film Festival, Cultural Tourism DC, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi, Yeditepe University and Williams-Sonoma, and has been officially proclaimed by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and DC Mayor Vincent Gray.

In partnership with Tysons Corner Center and Turkish Airlines, we are proud to announce the Turkish Heritage Weekend in McLean! The event will take place in the brand new, spectacular Tysons Corner Center Plaza with an exciting opening ceremony, live music and folk dancing, outdoor movie screenings, a traditional bazaar, Turkish cuisine, Turkish coffee & fortune telling and a special “Journey to Istanbul” fashion show.

Turkish Heritage Weekend is scheduled for September 12-14, 2014 and will take place at the Tysons Corner Center Plaza in McLean, VA.

Nazan and UtarNazan and Utar: Two young, talented artists Singer, songwriter and guitarist. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Nazan Nihal derives the inspiration behind her music through the real-life experiences of others.  Composer, film scorer and jazz pianist Utar Artun and. Nazan are working on collaborative projects.

 

Arlington Community Music Instructors

Listen to a great jam session and interviews with Arlington County Adult Education Program instructors Engin Tanis, Amy White, Toya Tanis, Paul Brown and Greg Sales. Program Coordinator Raul Matos outlines the goals of the program. TATV’s own Engin Tanis introduced the idea of an instrument drive to benefit children who want to learn and play musical instruments but are unable to afford their rental costs.

The 10th Turkish Festival in Washington, DC

The Turkish Festival in Washington, DC celebrated its 10th year on Sunday September 30, 2012 at Freedom Plaza! This festival, held every year in the beginning of the Autumn season, showcases the many facets of Turkey including: culture, history, entertainment, food, fashion, and much more. Several tents are set up along Freedom Plaza where visitors may learn more about Turkey; purchase jewelry, clothing, household goods, and food; and meet with organizations that serve to provide knowledge of the Turkish culture.

Washington DC Turkish Folk Dance Children’s Troupe

The festival is filled with many activities as well, including a Kid’s Tent, Turkish coffee fortune readings, and a wonderful show of folkloric dancing and music from all areas of Turkey. The show consisted of several different dances from Turkic Lands performed by Kardelen Turkish Dance Ensemble, Washington DC Turkish Folk Dance Children’s Troupe, Yeditepe University Folk Dance Club (YUFOLK), Nomad Dancers, and Silk Road Dance Company. The music was also a treat for the ears thanks to the stylings of Ishtar Band, Barrio Andalusi, and the Amir Vahab Ensemble.

The turnout for the festival this year was outstanding. People of all nationalities and all walks of life came together to enjoy a day of Turkish culture. The diversity that the festival drew to the streets of Washington, DC was evident. It was a great success and we hope to see everyone again next year!

The 9th Annual Turkish Festival in DC offers a full day of free activities that range from lively folk dancing and musical performances to arts and crafts activities for children and adults. Visitors can also enjoy other much-loved aspects of Turkey such as its delicious cuisine, tradition of coffee fortune reading, and bustling Bazaar.
